Become a secondary education teacher with professional experience and a first degree

Teaching Certification

This part-time training program qualifies you to teach a general education subject at secondary schools (middle schools, academic high schools, polytechnic schools, and intermediate and advanced vocational schools).
Once you begin working at a school, you have 8 years to complete the Continuing Education Program or the special Master’s program in Secondary Education (Career Change) in a specific subject area at the University College of Teacher Education Tyrol, while continuing to work as a teacher.

Requirements

To enroll in the part-time training program, you will need:

  • Confirmation from the Certification Commission that the eligibility assessment process for Career Change has been successfully completed
  • a current teaching position
  • the employer’s requirement to provide training equivalent to 60 ECTS credits or 90 ECTS credits

Program Structure

Learning about educational science, subject-specific teaching methods, and practical subject knowledge will enable you to provide professional guidance to your students.
From your first day on the job at a school, you will be a fully licensed teacher and can complete the four- or six-semester program while working. We place particular emphasis on closely integrating theory and practice, as well as ensuring a good balance between work and study through a coordinated mix of various online and in-person learning formats. Campus days are on Fridays and Saturdays.

The special Master’s program differs from the Continuing Education Program in that it includes an additional module in the fifth and sixth semesters, which encompasses, among other things, the Master’s thesis and its defense.

Typical Course of Study

Attached is a sample course of study for the first four semesters. You are free to drop courses and take them in the following academic year.
